Why Do We Worry?
You know the pit in your stomach that feels like it could suck you right in when you're thinking about the future? That's the physical manifestation of worrying. Worrying is a familiar experience that often creeps into our minds when we think about upcoming events or outcomes in our lives. Worrying has its roots in survival: we are built to assess potential threats, so worrying is a way to keep us safe.
It's as though our imaginations form the worst-case scenario and our bodies react to the thought. But here's the catch: not only is this exercise of predicting the worst possible events often futile; it's almost always counterproductive. We relinquish our power to negativity when we dwell in the realm of worrying. We must remember that we have more power than we think in shaping our own outcomes.
The Power of Imagination
Instead of allowing our imaginations to run wild regarding the worst, we are able to shift our mindset to a more positive and proactive approach. This means using our limitless imaginations to visualize the best possible outcomes, rather than the worst. Just think about it—what if, instead of worrying about that job interview or presentation, you instead envisioned yourself nailing it? Feel the confidence, the satisfaction of doing your best, and the joy that comes with it. It's a small change in behavior, but it can have a monumental impact on both how you feel and the outcome.
Co-Creating for a Beautiful Outcome
Shifting gears from worry to empowerment is easier than you think! Start by identifying what specifically is causing that worry. Is it an exam, a big decision, or perhaps a social event? Write it down. Once it’s on paper, break it down into actionable steps. What can you do today, tomorrow, or next week to prepare for this situation? This approach offers clarity and a sense of control, allowing you to redirect that anxious energy into constructive planning.
By taking deliberate steps towards creating a beautiful outcome, you shift your focus from fear into action. For instance, if you’re worried about an upcoming trip, spend some time planning your itinerary or even reaching out to friends who have visited those places. Engaging in proactivity takes your mind off the worry and places it squarely on co-creating your future.
While worrying can be an inevitable part of life, it is essential to recognize it for what it is—a took of our imagination rooted in survival that can be regulated. Opting to plan instead of succumb to fear can transform the energy once spent on anxiety into energy spent on fulfillment and joy. Remember, the next time your mind begins to race with worries, pause and ask yourself: How can I turn this concern into a plan? Because worrying is merely imagination run wild; let’s put those imaginations to work for our own benefit!
