Is Passion a Myth?
In a world filled with self-help slogans and motivational quotes, the phrase 'follow your passion' reigns supreme. It's a piece of advice that's so widespread that it has become a mantra for many. I am also guilty of uttering this well-meaning cliche a time or two. However, this popular piece of wisdom can often lead to confusion and disappointment. The underlying message implies that if you pursue what you love, success and fulfillment will naturally follow. But is that really the case? Sometimes.
The Truth Behind Passion
While the idea of following one’s passion sounds liberating, it can actually place immense pressure on individuals to identify their true calling. This expectation can lead to feelings of inadequacy, especially when passion doesn’t immediately translate into a successful career or fulfilling life. People often find themselves at a crossroads, struggling to figure out what they truly love while ignoring practical considerations such as skill, market demand, and financial stability.
The current advent of creators and social media influencers reinforce the mantra behind pursuing one's passion in order to create a fulfilling, abundant life. There is a TikToker who is making bank because she knows how to snap a pair of suspenders with appeal and gusto.
Of course, passions can evolve over time. What you once loved might not inspire you as you grow. Hence, focusing solely on passion can lead individuals down a frustrating rabbit hole of trial and error, trying to force fit a passion into a career that might not actually be sustainable. However, failures that are met as a result of pursuing one's passion is feedback and may later lead to a greater purpose.
What if Passion Follows Mastery?
What if, instead of adhering to the rigid idea of follow your passion a more nuanced approach is explored? What if the process is actually passion follows mastery? This perspective shifts the focus from chasing a fleeting interest to developing skills and expertise in areas that may initially be outside of our comfort zones. By committing to become proficient in a particular field, you might discover hidden passions along the way.
Mastery builds confidence, and as you improve in a skill, you may find that your enthusiasm grows, leading to a genuine passion for the work you do. This approach also encourages patience and resilience. Instead of seeking immediate gratification from pursuing what one loves, individuals approach their work with curiosity and a willingness to learn, understanding that skill development can lead to long-term satisfaction.
Exploration is the Key
So, if following your passion isn’t right for you, then what should you do instead? Start by exploring various interests and opportunities without the pressure of making them your lifelong vocation. Volunteer, intern, or take online courses to get a sense of what resonates with you. Embrace experiences that interest you, and be open to where they may lead.
Explore your fulfillment by doing stuff you love and become really good at it.
Ultimately, rather than adhering to the simplistic adage of chasing passion, looking towards mastery may offer a more realistic and fulfilling path. It invites a mindset of continuous learning, growth, and the possibility of discovering true passion in the process.
